After talking for WEEKS about how he was going to be a cat for
Halloween, Nicky point-blank refused to put his costume on, even with
the threat of not being allowed to trick-or-treat. Mr. Pickles
had to wrestle him into it right before we left.

(Soot Sprite makes an excellent Halloween decoration. Once when I was handing out candy, Soot Sprite was sitting on those white shelves, and I heard the mom exclaim to her kids, "Oh! That's a REAL one!")
We almost didn't have Halloween this year. The weather report was
predicting severe thunderstorms with tornado warnings all through the
evening. We watched the forecast anxiously. Our friends who were
supposed to come trick-or-treating with us decided not to risk it,
since they would have had to drive home during the worst of the
predicted storm.
And, of course, the evening was
lovely.
It got windy towards the end, but the rain didn't start until
well after everyone was in bed. So we did get our annual supply of tooth-rotting candy
in. The kids were grateful, especially since there weren't a whole lot
of other trick-or-treaters out (some neighborhoods postponed trick-or-treating to the next day), so every house was giving away HANDFULS of
candy.

Because of the immanent threat of rain, we ran through the neighborhood, trying to hit as many houses as we could. At one point Katie called out to her brothers, "Come on, guys! Time is candy!"
