The two of you who frequently visit this blog probably noticed that we don't have much new material. We have a few good reasons for this. Really, we do. Here's a list of the top 5 reasons why we haven't blogged.
5.) We just got cable, and we've been mesmerized watching the weather channel and the home shopping network (it's even better than Skymall!).
4.) Alien abduction
3.) Forging alien crop circles
2.) Vacation to CA
1.) Waterlogged basement
Prior to the past week we were in CA visiting family. A great time had by all.
Since we've returned the weather forecast since last Friday has been comparable to Genesis 7. Parts of Alexandria, VA were hit very badly, and some people had severe flooding in their basements (7+ feet of water). We didn't have any flooding, but our sump pump (a water pump that does all of the hard work when our drain in the backyard can't handle the rain) decided to take it's mandated 15 minute break during the torrential rainfall this past Sunday night. During that 15 minutes we went upstairs to put our girls to bed, and came downstairs to see about 1 inch of water flowing in our basement.
Since that unfortunate deluge our house has been turned upside down. We've had a lot of work to do during the past week, and our computer is currently sitting in our living room as we clean out the basement. And our sump pump apologized profusely and begged not to be thrown in the trash heap (we're waiting, so it's currently on probation).
Mrs. P will no doubt have some blogs about our recent trips and adventures once our life returns to "normal."
So, now you know, and thanks for the prayers.

What Would Freud Say?
A recent dream of Miriam's:
"You know, last day when I was asleep I heard a cockle-a-doo and I saw a chicken and the girl chicken was trying to eat my Katie and then the cow came and ate the chicken and the snake was pretty okay: he was just snaking around and looking for some food, and then he went back outside to look for some food."

This is my futile attempt to update the blog before we go on our big vacation and amass even more pictures.

Katie being... Katie
Even thought she doesn't say much, Katie is pretty good at getting her point across.

Put food here!
I had a recipe for making your own play-doh. The girls love it. It's a great way to keep them busy while I'm working in the kitchen.

play-doh time

who did she just murder??

I like "abees"!
As you may have guessed, we went strawberry picking a few weeks back. (That's about 11 lbs. right there.) Naturally, we forgot to bring the camera. Katie loved helping. Mr. Pickles tried to teach her the difference between a strawberry and a leaf, with some success, but she couldn't quite grasp the white=bad/red=good concept. Miriam picked for about 2 minutes then decided she was bored. She was more interested in running across a huge green field right next to the strawberry patch! Poor sheltered city kid.

mmm... strawberry shortcake (100% homemade -- we even whipped the cream ourselves!)
I love my wonderful hubby who buys me such pretty flowers!

fuffer!
...and gives me such beautiful girls...

Ember Days
Today, Friday, and Saturday are the last of those days before the beginning of the next Church season, and they are called the "Ember Days."
From the Catholic Encyclopedia:
You can read the entire article here.
We first came across Ember Days from a cookbook called "A Continual Feast". In that book the author states that they are probably taken from a Jewish custom of 4 fasts each year, though the Catholic Encyclopedia pegs their origin to four yearly pagan feasts. The Ember Days are also a time to spiritually prepare for the next Church season, and Mrs. Pickles and I thought it was a great idea to end a season of feasting and partying with fasting--to remind us of our weakness, our need, and our earthly pilgrimmage.
Pray, and fast.
Peace of Christ,
The Pickles
From the Catholic Encyclopedia:
Ember days (corruption from Lat. Quatuor Tempora, four times) are the days at the beginning of the seasons ordered by the Church as days of fast and abstinence. They were definitely arranged and prescribed for the entire Church by Pope Gregory VII (1073-1085) ....
